Acupuncture is one of the major forms of treatment used in TCM. It is based on a wholistic approach that focuses as much on the prevention of illness as it does the treatment of the disease process itself.
Acupuncture treatment includes the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific acu-points along the body’s meridians. According to the theory of Chinese medicine, the human body has a network of meridians trough which Qi (energy) flows, just as blood flows through the blood vessels. If the flow of ‘Qi’ in these meridians is impaired in any way, whether it be a blockage or an inadequate supply of Qi the body fails to maintain normal function and disease or illness ensues.
On these meridians there are many acu-points which have important and very specific functions. The principle of acupuncture is to stimulate these specific acu-points in order to re-establish the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body which in turn brings into balance the ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’ of the body.
Most people find acupuncture virtually painless and very relaxing.
